Join PRSA Chicago, in partnership with Nielsen, for a thoughtful and informative discussion around the Black community and this leading consumer segment with Chicago leaders in media, business, community activism and multicultural marketing communications.

Our conversation comes at a critical time, when Black audiences are being illuminated with a backdrop of social justice, societal reform and global reckoning. The movement has sparked cross-impact for consumers, small businesses and global brands looking to authentically connect with this diverse segment. During the event, we will explore the demand for understanding. Attendees will leave more informed about data, insights and subject matter expert perspectives that help to advance both consumer and brand narratives. We will unwrap the impact of current events that now play a significant role in communications strategies and business models through the lens of diversity, equity and inclusion.

2020 has totally reshaped the American storyline around Black consumers far beyond buying power alone. So, how can we uncover the experiences and realities of the people behind the 1.4 trillion dollars? What cultural, political and economic factors are an influence on this consumer segment?

Cheryl Grace is the Senior Vice President of U.S. Strategic Community Alliances and Consumer Engagement for Nielsen and drives Nielsen’s multicultural thought leadership strategy. As the lead content executive for all domestic multicultural and diversity initiatives, she spearheads important conversations on trending diversity issues of importance to Nielsen, its clients, stakeholders, and U.S. communities. Grace is the visionary behind Nielsen’s award- winning African-American Consumer Report, which led to the company’s historic creation of Nielsen’s Diverse Intelligence Series — a robust portfolio of comprehensive reports which focuses solely on diverse consumers’ unique consumption and purchasing habits.

Named one of Black Enterprises’ Top 50 Powerful Women in Business Grace has been recognized with numerous national, regional and local honors and featured in many publications. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Purdue University and a Master of Business Administration from the Keller Graduate School of Management, and lives in Chicago, Illinois.

Eric Williams

Eric Williams is the founder and creative director of The Silver Room, an innovative retail, arts, education and community events space opened in 1997. The Silver Room intersects the worlds of fashion, music and visual art, and acts as a boutique, gallery, and community arts center. Williams spearheads The Silver Room Block party, in its 16th year, attendance has grown to host 40,000 people. A 2019 economic impact report stated that The Silver Room Block Party, a one-day celebration of community, culture and music on Chicago’s Southside has an economic impact of $2 million.  

Since his 2018 Harvard Loeb fellowship, Williams has been driven to develop opportunities that revitalize Southside communities and fuel their economic growth through retail, arts and culture. Williams holds a degree in Finance from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Kathy Chaney

Kathy Chaney is the Executive Producer, Daily News and Midwest Hub for YR Media and has more than 20 years of experience across all platforms including, print, digital and broadcast. She is a passionate advocate for the Black Press and diversity in newsrooms.

Prior to joining YR, Chaney was the Deputy Managing Editor, Breaking News and Staff Development for the Chicago Sun-Times. She was also the Managing Editor for Ebony magazine. She’s worked in several newsrooms, including Reporter/Producer for NPR's Chicago affiliate WBEZ, Managing Editor at the Chicago Defender and on the commodities desk at Thomson Reuters.

Chaney is also a member of NABJ, serving as Vice President-Print; NAHJ; AAJA; IRE; JAWS; and NLA.

Hasani Henderson is an avid relationship developer, resource connector and media manager that provides diligence and innovation through various endeavors. Whether that be managing million-dollar campaigns at Pandora Media or supervising others in philanthropic efforts, he brings an exuberance and efficiency that is unique, engaging and memorable. 

He is a Southside Chicago native with a passion for the community and championing the potential of people. In the summer of 2011, a stray bullet struck a young basketball phenom on a bright summer day in the park blocks away from his home. He had lost someone much like a little brother, and vowed to prevent other youth from falling prey to the violence whilst showing the beauty Chicago possesses that is seldom reported. In 2014, Henderson founded #TheTakeBack Chicago - a peace promoting 501(c3) organization geared towards the youth of Chicago’s South Side. The annual back-to-school festival has provided more than 3,500 youth with resources to fuel active play, begin the school year prepared, and enjoy a day of peaceful fun in an encouraging environment. The initiative has also awarded over $10k in scholarships and provided more than 300 masks to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Henderson also sat on the board of Chicago Youth Opportunities Initiative and was awarded the Viacommunity Award in 2017 for his outstanding service. 

In addition to his 9-5 job at Pandora, he is also the Co-Chair for Mixtape, a Resource Group focused on diversity, inclusion and creating a pipeline for people of color in the Media/Entertainment and Tech fields. As a graduate from the University of Missouri's top journalism school and member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Henderson has consistently dedicated his skills, time and efforts to improving the lives of others and connecting resources to unlock others' potential.

Christina Steed is an Executive Vice President of Client Relations with Flowers Communications Group (FCG) an integrated marketing communications agency headquartered in Chicago. She is primarily responsible for business development, client relations and external marketing for the agency. 

Steed’s background includes a mix of journalism, consumer and business-to-business (B2B) public relations and marketing communications, social media, content marketing, stakeholder engagement, trade show marketing, and international communications. She has previously held management positions with Golin; a small B2B marcom agency focused on global trade show marketing; and an international foodservice packaging manufacturer.  

With a lifelong commitment to quality storytelling, she began her career in broadcast journalism after receiving her B.S. in Journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her M.A. in Strategic Communication from the University of Missouri-Columbia’s School of Journalism. 

Steed has been featured in PR Week, PR News, PR Newswire, and Rolling Out. She is also a podcaster with her podcast Firsts Over Forty and frequent contributor to her agency’s blog with her video series FLOW Along with Steed Steed. She is also an adjunct professor in the College of Communication with a focus on multicultural marketing communications at DePaul University.

Steed enjoys reading, writing, traveling, attending live concerts, yoga and social media surfing. She is a member of the Publicity Club of Chicago, the Black Public Relations Society, ColorComm, and the National Association of Black Journalists. A native of Chicago’s south suburbs, she is married and currently resides in Chicago and Atlanta
