Michelle Flowers Diversity Fellowship Program

About PROGRAM

Award:  Two Annual Renewable Awards.  Each at $3,000

Established in 2019, the PRSA Chicago Michelle Flowers Diversity Fellowship Program is designed to attract, recruit and retain people of color to the practice of public relations and communications. While multicultural consumers move from the minority to the majority in the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the ethnic makeup of the PR industry in the U.S. is 87.9% white, 8.3% African American, 2.6% Asian American, and 5.7% Hispanic American. PRSA Chicago is committed to investing in the educational development of the next generation of multicultural PR professionals with financial assistance and employment opportunities. Its Diversity Fellowship Program will help attract and train more diverse professionals, creating a robust pipeline of new talent.

Two awards, each in the amount of $3,000, will be presented to talented communications students who are of African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Native American, Alaskan Native or Pacific Island ancestry who are rising juniors.  The award will include a summer internship at a Chicago agency affiliated with PRSA Chicago between the Diversity Fellow’s junior and senior year. The award is then renewable for the Fellow’s senior year based on attaining a 3.0 GPA.

Following graduation, the Diversity Fellows will be considered for additional employment opportunities at PRSA Chicago member agencies. Membership in the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is preferred, but is not a requirement.
